The PCP collector and monitor functionality require the
installation of separate collector and monitor software
licenses. That is, you need to install a monitor license on
each workstation that will be used for performance
monitoring and analysis, and a collector license on each
system to be monitored.
If you are upgrading a PCP 1.0 installation, your existing
NetLS license is converted to a FLEXlm license, and
continues operating as a valid monitor license. Every PCP
monitor system needs a monitor license. You should have
received FLEXlm collector licenses as part of your upgrade.
You will need to install these licenses on each PCP
collector system.
If you are upgrading from PCP 1.1, your existing NetLS
licenses should be converted to FLEXlm licenses. This
should happen automatically during the installation.
PCP 1.2 and 1.3 use the same license technology and versions
so no action is required for this upgrade.
This chapter defines some important software licensing
terms, describes the basic procedure for obtaining,
installing, and testing a software license for PCP, and
lists addresses and phone numbers that you can use to
contact Silicon Graphics License Administration.
For more information about software licenses, see the _F_L_E_X_l_m
_U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e, which provides detailed information on using
and administering software licenses. It is included in the
system software documentation; the online version is in the
subsystem _l_i_c_e_n_s_e__e_o_e._b_o_o_k_s._F_l_e_x_L_M__U_G.
7.1 _A__F_e_w__D_e_f_i_n_i_t_i_o_n_s
A _s_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _l_i_c_e_n_s_e is a collection of information that,
after installation, allows you to use a licensed software
product on one or more systems. The software license
information includes the license type, the license
expiration date, a license password, system host name, and
host ID number (_l_m_h_o_s_t_i_d), and additional information
concerning the license and licensed software. You can find
the host name using the command /sbin/uname -n, and the host
ID number using the command /usr/sbin/lmhostid. The license
must be installed on the system that has the host name
included in the software license information. If the host
name is ``ANY'', the software license can be installed on
- 2 -
any system.
There are two types of software licenses, _n_o_d_e-_l_o_c_k_e_d and
_c_o_n_c_u_r_r_e_n_t, and two durations of software licenses,
_t_e_m_p_o_r_a_r_y and _p_e_r_m_a_n_e_n_t:
node-locked A node-locked license is installed on a
particular system (node) and allows the
licensed software to run on that system.
concurrent A concurrent license allows the licensed
software to run on one or more systems in the
network simultaneously. The number of systems
(nodes) allowed is included in the software
license information. The system on which a
concurrent license is installed must be
configured as a license server. (See Chapter 1
of the _F_L_E_X_l_m _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e for more information
about license servers.)
temporary A temporary license allows you to use the
licensed software for a short period, typically
a week to several months. The expiration date
tells you the last date on which you can use
the licensed software. Temporary licenses are
often shipped with software so that you can use
the software before a permanent license is
issued.
permanent A permanent license allows you to use this
release of the licensed software for a long
time. Permanent licenses are issued only for
software that has been purchased.
The PCP software requires _n_o_d_e-_l_o_c_k_e_d licenses. The
licenses may be either _t_e_m_p_o_r_a_r_y or _p_e_r_m_a_n_e_n_t.
7.2 _O_b_t_a_i_n_i_n_g__a_n_d__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__a__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e__L_i_c_e_n_s_e
This section explains the procedure for obtaining and
installing a software license: checking to see if you have
received software license information, determining if you
need to install licenses, requesting software license
information if you need it, identifying the system on which
you will install the license, installing the software
license information, and verifying that the license is
working.
1. Check to see if you have received software license
information.
- 3 -
Software license information is distributed in several
ways: on labels attached to a Software License
Registration card, on sheets of paper included with
the product, or by mail, FAX, electronic mail, or via
the World Wide Web. This product may be shipped with
node-locked temporary licenses.
2. Determine if you need to install software licenses.
You may or may not need to install software licenses
for PCP:
+o If you are simply updating your system to this
release of PCP, you may not need to install a new
license at this time; your already-installed
license may continue to work.
+o If you have received both a temporary license and
a permanent software license, install the
permanent license; do not install the temporary
license.
+o If you have received a permanent license, you
should install it because it enables you to use
the software that you have purchased.
+o If you have received a temporary software license
but do not need to use the software immediately,
you may choose to wait to install a license until
you obtain the permanent license.
3. Request a software license if you don't have a
software license at all, or if you have a temporary
license and need a permanent license.
To obtain a software license, fill out the Software
License Registration card that was included with the
software (or the replica in the _F_L_E_X_l_m _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e).
Send the information or the card by electronic mail
(preferred), FAX, or mail to Silicon Graphics License
Administration or your local service provider (see the
next section for addresses). After your request is
received by Silicon Graphics or your local service
provider, you should receive a software license within
two business days.
4. Identify the system on which you will install the
software license.
Because software license information usually must be
installed on a particular system, follow these
- 4 -
guidelines:
+o Use the /sbin/uname -n command to identify the
system on which the license is intended to be
used.
+o If the sysinfo is ``ANY'' you can install the
license on any system you choose.
+o If the host name included with the software
license information doesn't match the host name
of the system on which you want to install the
license, contact Silicon Graphics License
Administration.
5. Install the software license (temporary or permanent).
Check the ``license type'' listed in the software
license information. It should be node-locked. The
installation procedure is as follows: use the
_L_i_c_e_n_s_e_M_a_n_a_g_e_r(1M) tool. You can bring up
LicenseManager by choosing ``License Manager'' from
the System toolchest.
6. Verify that the software license has been successfully
installed.
Execute the following command to display the current
valid PCP licenses:
$ /usr/pcp/bin/pmbrand -q
To verify that a collector license is working, try
starting up the Performance Metrics Collector Daemon
ppppmmmmccccdddd(1) on the licensed system by running the
following commands as rrrrooooooootttt:
# chkconfig pmcd on
# /etc/init.d/pcp start
To verify that a monitor license is working, try
running one of the licensed visualization or analysis
programs. The licensed programs include: _p_m_c_h_a_r_t(1),
_m_p_v_i_s(1), and _p_m_i_e(1).
If you installed a temporary license and you are
entitled to a permanent license, replace the temporary
license with a permanent license as soon as possible
to ensure uninterrupted use of PCP.

If your temporary license is due to expire within the next
30 days, a message or popup notifier appears informing you
of this condition. You can disable these warnings by
defining the environment variable PPPPCCCCPPPP____LLLLIIIICCCCEEEENNNNCCCCEEEE____NNNNOOOOWWWWAAAARRRRNNNNIIIINNNNGGGG.
7.4 _C_o_n_t_a_c_t_i_n_g__S_i_l_i_c_o_n__G_r_a_p_h_i_c_s__L_i_c_e_n_s_e__A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n
